1 Virginia       U S House of Representatives and Minnesota and Colorado and New York Governors or Candidates for Governor          Partisan Mud Fight or Focus on the Midterms? Redistricting Divides Democrats    Governor Abigail Spanberger of Virginia urged her fellow Democrats including the House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries to stop talking about drawing new congressional lines for partisan advantage          Excerpts edited by Residents Against Wood Smoke Emission Particulates            The New York Times       May 22 2026       With Democratic efforts to redraw the Virginia congressional boundaries in shambles for now two central figures in the fight are at odds over what to do next    Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York the minority leader continues to push for maximum warfare everywhere all the time vowing with a phrase he borrowed from Republicans to redraft lines to give Democrats an advantage not only in Virginia but across the country before the 2028 elections    Governor Abigail Spanberger of Virginia whose approval ratings dropped precipitously as she campaigned for her a redistricting referendum for her state is urging her party to drop its quest for partisan advantage in favor of a more pressing issue winning the midterms    It is outrageously premature of us to be talking about any sort of redistricting or map changing effort when we have to win the most consequential midterms of my lifetime this November Ms Spanberger said in an interview this week taking an unsubtle jab at Mister   Jeffries and reflecting broader disquiet among Democrats about how to counter Republican gerrymanders after the Virginia Supreme Court ruled the referendum there unconstitutional    The issue burst into view this week on the sidelines of a policy conference hosted by the Center for American Progress in Washington    Ms Spanberger said the continued focus of the Democratic party on redistricting was a distraction from addressing affordability  the Trump leadership and other issues that she said would matter far more to voters this year    She did not say she would oppose implementing a partisan gerrymander in Virginia before the 2028 elections    But the issue is one she and some other Democrats would prefer to leave aside for now and instead focus on the midterm elections this fall    For years Democrats have cast themselves as the party of good governance offering support for initiatives that mandate nonpartisan redistricting    But they also want to win prompting Ms Spanberger to focus on November    Anytime someone whether it is Hakeem or anyone else talks about some other point off in the future it is a distraction from the task at hand which is winning in November she said    As for talk of redistricting the governor said That time is over now    Hakeem Jeffries also mentioned the goal of flipping multiple seats in Virginia this year during his public remarks this week    At the conference he pledged that Democrats would again seek to redraw maps of Virginia in the next two years    We are going to work as hard as we can in advance of 2028 to restore that 10 to 1 map because that is what the voters decided would be appropriate moving forward Hakeem Jeffries said at the conference    Democrat efforts largely failed Republicans are expected to gain between six and 12 GOP leaning districts before the midterms    Hakeem Jeffries at the Washington conference put the number at three to four    A spokesman for Senator the Amy Klobuchar campaign for Minnesota governor pointed to limits in the Constitution of Minnesota regarding redistricting in the middle of a decade as a reason Amy Klobuchar had not been making it part of her pitch to voters    A spokesman for Governor Katie Hobbs a Democrat in Arizona declined to comment on a potential redistricting effort there    Other Democratic governors or candidates for those offices are fully supportive of the effort    We have to do everything we can to fight back Senator Michael Bennet a Democratic candidate for governor in Colorado said in a statement    He said he supported the one time change to the Constitution of Colorado    Governor Kathy Hochul of New York also supports a redistricting push ahead of 2028    It is a fight for our democracy she said in remarks this month     I want to make sure that New Yorkers have representation when it comes to decisions affecting their lives

residential building in Kyiv overnight on May 24 2026    Excerpts edited by Residents Against Wood Smoke Emission Particulates            The Kiev Independent May 24  2026               Russian forces launched a large scale combined missile and drone attack on Kyiv and the surrounding region overnight on May 24 killing two and injuring over 80 others    The Air Force of Ukraine said that Russia launched 90 missiles and 600 drones making the attack one of the largest in the last year    Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported damage in every district of the city as missile and drone strikes hit across the capital including central areas that tend to see fewer strikes during Russian attacks    The National Art Museum one of the oldest and most important museums in Ukraine was damaged by a blast wave according to the Culture Ministry    The windows to the entrance of the Ukrainian House a major cultural institution on the Kyiv central Khreshchatyk Street were also damaged in the attack    Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said that for the first time since World War II the Foreign Ministry building sustained damage from an attack albeit not severely    Civilian homes and infrastructure were also targeted in the attack    There were sounds a terrifying explosion    A terrible explosion    Flames    For a brief instant maybe a second I lost consciousness Yevhen a 74 year old pensioner told the Kyiv Independent at one of the attack sites    I cannot say I was scared    I was not scared    You see we Kyiv residents are already used to this    Our emotions have become a little dulled    Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Russia used its Oreshnik medium range ballistic missile during the attack the third time Russia has used the sophisticated weapon against Ukraine    The strike targeted Bila Tserkva a town 50 miles south of Kyiv    The Kyiv Independent journalists on the ground reported a massive series of wall shaking explosions in the Ukraine capital from around 1 a m local time and then again multiple times between 3 a m and 5 a m as Russia launched waves of ballistic and cruise missiles at the city    Three Russian missiles hit a water supply facility set a market on fire damaged dozens of residential buildings and several ordinary schools Zelensky said in a Telegram post on May 24 2026    Over 80 people were injured during the attack according to Zelensky    Klitschko said that two people died    That number will likely rise as emergency services continue to clear rubble throughout the day    Damage was reported to at least seven multi story residential buildings in the Obolonskyi Shevchenkivskyi Dniprovskyi Holosiivskyi Solomianskyi and Pecherskyi district of Kyiv Klitschko said    The Ukraine State Emergency Service said that the structural collapse of the first through the fifth floors of a building in the Shevchenkivskyi district was seen    Several homes were also struck by Russian projectiles across the city    Among other damage to infrastructure in Kyiv Russian missiles and drones struck a supermarket and shopping center office center dormitory service station garage parked vehicles and multiple warehouses across various neighborhoods of the city    A Kyiv Independent journalist also reported seeing a large fire near the Kontraktova Ploshcha metro station following a missile strike    Ihor Smelyansky the CEO of Ukrposhta the national postal service of Ukraine said that the postal agency headquarters on the Kyiv central Independence Square sustained damage in the attack    In Kyiv Oblast Russian projectiles struck the communities of Fastiv Bucha Brovary Bila Tserkva Vyshhorod and Boryspil Kalashnyk said striking residential buildings homes garages and utility buildings and a warehouse    Photo of Residents taking shelter in a metro station in central Kyiv during a Russian air attack on the Ukrainian capital early on May 24 2026     Elsewhere in Ukraine explosion were also heard in the cities of Cherkasy and Kropyvnytskyi as well as in Khmelnytskyi Oblast amid the attack public broadcaster Suspilne reported     In response to the attack the Air Force of Poland said it scrambled Polish and allied fighter jets in an effort to protect Polish air space    The latest attack comes hours after President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Russia was preparing a broader assault across the country including for the possible use of its Oreshnik medium range missile against Ukraine     Russia first used an Oreshnik against Ukraine in November 2024 in a strike on the city of Dnipro    The missile was most recently used in an attack on western Lviv Oblast on January 9 2026     Earlier in the night Russian attacks injured civilians in southern and eastern Ukraine including in Odesa and Kharkiv oblasts    Comments  It is about time to hit the Kremlin    I believe the strike on the dormitory Putin blamed on Ukraine was carried out by the Russians themselves to give them an excuse to commit the criminal acts carried out on Kyiv today    Putin has demonstrated time after time he is a terrorist thug with a record of killing Russians or anyone who stands against him    He is incapable of human thoughts or emotions    The deliberate killing of Ukrainian citizens would not be happening with monotonous regularity if this pathetic excuse for a human being was terminated    It is past time for him to be taken out    Ukraine should carry out a similar attack on Moscow only then will Russians realize what hell on earth feels like    God bless Ukraine and all of her wonderful brave people

2B Russia Ukraine War            Drones from Ukraine Hit Moscow         Russian Forces Struggle       Russia Pummels Kyiv in Major Missile and Drone Attack Buildings rattled in the Ukrainian capital for hours early Sunday    It was unclear if the Russian Oreshnik intermediate range ballistic missile had been used    The sky lit up from the glow of fires during a Russian strike on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv early Sunday       Excerpts edited by Residents Against Wood Smoke Emission Particulates            The New York Times           May 24 2026           Russia unleashed a huge missile and drone attack on the Ukraine capital early Sunday morning with explosions rattling buildings for hours and igniting several fires throughout the city    The bombardment damaged two entryways to the subway system  which is used as an underground refuge for thousands of people during air attacks including in a strike on or near the Kyiv central Independence Square known as the Maidan and a symbol of the Ukraine resistance to Russia    President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine had warned that Russia planned to launch an Oreshnik  a type of intermediate  range ballistic missile specifically designed to carry nuclear warheads    Russia had used these missiles twice previously on Ukraine first in 2024 and then in January 2026 but with dummy devices in place of explosives    Those earlier attacks were seen as a way to intimidate Ukraine or Western allies rather than to inflict significant damage    The Oreshnik is fired as a form of nuclear saber rattling as a political tool rather than an effective weapon    It was unclear early Sunday whether the Oreshnik had been launched this time    The missile releases multiple warheads while in flight and they streak quickly on steep trajectories that American Patriot air defense systems cannot intercept    Reports from Bila Tserkva a town about 50 miles south of Kyiv suggested the characteristic fast moving flurry of warheads had landed there    Though damage has been limited in past strikes for Ukrainians the recurring use of the missile is a harrowing nerve rattling normalization of the use of a doomsday weapon from the Russian nuclear capable arsenal    The volley of drones and missiles that flew into Kyiv early Sunday appeared to cause extensive damage    As the sun rose columns of smoke were visible at several spots on the skyline    Ukrainska Pravda a Ukrainian news outlet reported that a strike had buried the entryway at a bomb shelter at a school trapping people inside    Before Russia used the Oreshnik nuclear capable missile in past strikes it had warned the United States    President Zelensky in his own warning to Ukrainians that Russia was preparing a large scale attack that could include the missile said that U   S    and European nations had informed Ukraine of Russian plans to launch the missile    We are drawing the attention of our partners in the United States and in Europe to the fact that the use of such weapons and the prolongation of this war also sets a global precedent for other potential aggressors President  Zelensky wrote in his warning to Ukrainians which was posted on social media on Saturday    The two previous attacks with this type of missile hit the city of Dnipro in central Ukraine and a site in western Ukraine near the Polish border    The attack early Sunday followed setbacks on the battlefield for Russia and a humiliating and costly recent run of successful Ukrainian long  range drone attacks on facilities for exporting oil the lifeblood of the Russian economy    Russia scaled back its annual Victory Day parade on Red Square in Moscow earlier this month amid worry of Ukrainian drone attacks

2C Ukraine           President Volodymyr Zelensky called a German proposal to grant Ukraine participation in European Union institutions without voting rights unfair in a letter later confirmed by Ukraine presidential adviser Dmytro Lytvyn on May 23    Excerpts edited by Residents Against Wood Smoke Emission Particulates            The Kiev Independent           May 24 2026             The comments come after German Chancellor Friedrich Merz  proposed  creating an interim associate form of EU membership for Ukraine and other candidate countries while they wait for full accession to the bloc    The proposal would allow Ukraine to participate in EU meetings and institutions without receiving full voting rights as Brussels continues to face internal disagreements and delays over enlargement    It would be unfair for Ukraine to be present in the European Union but remain voiceless Zelensky wrote in the letter
