cold weather climates a several years long testing process of biodiesel and renewable diesel has allowed the department to find a fuel blend to operate its vehicles without fossil fuels down to zero degrees This is going to be the backbone of our winter fuel program Darken said Going forward we will be able to increase that percentage of renewable diesel in the warmer months and get more bang for our buck The alternative fuels and use of EVs and hybrids reduced the carbon footprint of Madison by Five million pounds of carbon dioxide last year Darken said equivalent to the amount of heat trapping CO2 pumped out by Forty Hundred Seventy Three homes in a full year according to the EPA greenhouse gas calculator Much of the initial effort of Madison has gone into reducing emissions from energy use to the city once a year Some buildings must undergo a tuneup every four years to reduce energy use The first tuneup is required this year for commercial buildings over One Hundred Thousand square feet and buildings between Fifty Thousand and Ninety Nine Thousand Nine Hundred Ninety Nine square feet must get tuneups next year So far the city has reported Ninety Two Percent compliance with the new rules and has completed a tuneup of its own buildings Studies in Two Thousand Eighteen and Two Thousand Twenty Two found commercial energy accounted for roughly Forty Five Percent of
