24 Trump United States       New York and North Carolina Wind Farms halted by French Company in exchange for nearly one Billion Dollars in US Taxpayer Money         Trump Administration to Pay One Billion Dollars to Energy Giant to Cancel Wind Farms In exchange the French company TotalEnergies would invest in oil and natural gas projects in Texas and elsewhere    Under the terms TotalEnergies would forfeit its leases in federal waters for two wind farms that would have been built off New York and North Carolina    RAWSEP View    The reason Trump gives for stopping wind energy projects is that they are ugly   On the contrary wind turbines look beautiful     The shock of Trump projection of his own negative qualities onto what he attacks is no longer new and no longer news     The bottom line is that Trump is squandering taxpayer money and receiving favors from the fossil fuel industry and solid fuels industries  such as wood burning industries as well   The War in Iran over fossil fuels which is conversely destroying by fire fossil fuels is also squandering missiles needed by Ukraine    The Ukrainian nation was a breadbasket with productive farms and is the largest European nation in area   This war is depriving Europe and the World from the needed produce of Ukraine    The Ukrainian nation has offered technology to fight Iran drones but Trump has rejected that aid      Trump gives battleground information to Russia who sends on the information to Iran     Trump has lifted sanctions on Russia and Iran in the last month which in effect gives billions of profits to Russia and Iran to fuel their war making machines       Excerpts edited for brevity and clarity by Residents Against Wood Smoke Emission Particulates a 501C3 nonprofit organization        March 23 2026        The Trump administration will pay the French energy giant TotalEnergies nearly one billion dollars to abandon its plans to build wind farms off the East Coast the Interior Department said on Monday at an energy conference in Houston    Under the unusual deal TotalEnergies would forfeit its leases in federal waters for two wind farms which would have been built off New York and North Carolina    The Justice Department would then reimburse TotalEnergies nine hundred twenty eight million dollars the amount it paid for the leases during the Biden administration    In exchange TotalEnergies would invest that money in oil and gas projects in the United States including a facility in Texas that would export liquefied natural gas to global markets    The company would also commit to producing more oil in the Gulf of Mexico and said it was developing some additional gas burning power plants to meet rising electricity demand from data centers    The deal is an extraordinary transfer of taxpayer dollars to a foreign company for the purposes of boosting the production of fossil fuels a main driver of climate change while throttling offshore wind power    It comes as the war in the Middle East has shocked global oil markets prompting concerns about energy supplies    The New York Times first reported last week that the administration was considering the agreement    Interior Secretary Doug Burgum unveiled the deal on Monday at CERAWeek by S and P Global an annual energy conference in Houston where he claimed that wind power was ineffective    The era of taxpayers subsidizing unreliable unaffordable and unsecure energy is officially over and the era of affordable reliable and secure energy is here to stay  Burgum said    Patrick Pouyanné the chief executive of TotalEnergies called the agreement a pragmatic business decision    When the Trump administration came to power and began setting US energy policy we said that we will have to reconsider clearly these offshore wind project developments  Pouyanné said    He said that since winning the leases the company had concluded that offshore wind was not the most affordable way to produce electricity and would require federal subsidies that are now being phased out by the Trump administration    To be clear we do not renounce onshore wind  Pouyanné added    We continue to invest in onshore solar onshore wind batteries    But in the United States he said offshore wind is too expensive from our point of view    Late last year the Trump administration tried to quash five wind farms in various stages of construction along the East Coast    It took the drastic step of ordering a halt to construction of the projects which had each received federal permits after years of review    The developers of the projects and several states sued    Federal judges ruled against the Trump administration in every case    The larger of the two wind farms planned by TotalEnergies known as Attentive Energy would have been built 54 miles south of Jones Beach New York      It would have produced enough electricity to power more than one million homes and businesses in New York and New Jersey    The smaller wind project Carolina Long Bay would have operated 22 miles south of Bald Head Island North Carolina and could have powered around three hundred thousand homes and businesses starting in the early 2030s    The agreement between TotalEnergies and the administration comes as the war in the Middle East has rattled global oil markets     Some experts have argued that investments in renewable energy including wind and solar power can help countries protect against the volatility of oil prices particularly during wartime    The lesson that folks in Europe learned when the full scale Ukraine invasion happened was that they really needed to look at their own native energy resources said Seth Kaplan a vice president at Grid Strategies a consulting firm focused on the power sector    Governor Kathy Hochul of New York criticized the deal in a statement on Monday    Using a pay not to play scheme to pressure a company to not build offshore wind is an outrageous abuse of taxpayer dollars Governor Hochul a Democrat said    I remain committed to moving forward with my all of the above approach that includes renewables nuclear and other energy sources needed to keep the lights on and costs down    Representatives for Governor Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey and Governor Josh Stein of North Carolina both Democrats did not immediately respond to requests for comment    Representatives for the Interior Department also did not respond to questions about the source of the nearly one billion dollars    Energy lawyers said it would probably come from the Judgment Fund of the Justice Department which is used to pay court judgments and settlements with the government     Trump has disparaged offshore wind power since 2012 when he tried unsuccessfully to stop a project visible from one of his golf courses in Scotland    He has often called the projects ugly and has claimed without evidence that they are driving whales crazy    When it ordered construction to halt on the five other wind farms being built along the East Coast in December the administration cited a classified report that it said found that the projects threatened national security    Federal judges said they were unpersuaded by the national security claims of the government after reviewing the report which has not been made public

25 California        Where There is Wildfire Smoke There is Poor Mental Health      RAWSEP View      Just do not burn wood to begin with      That is the primary solution to the adverse effects on human health from wood smoke    Rational persons look at physical health first and do not repeat the mistakes of the past which include humans starting wood burning fires intentionally    Labeling persons exposed to wood smoke as mentally ill rather than looking first at the physical effects of wood smoke on the human body is a distraction that wood burning lobbyists will welcome     The misnamed Wellness Movement of RFK Junior would also look at sitting around a campfire as a welcome and irrational diversion from real life problems of the scientifically proven adverse health effects of wood smoke      Giving attention to people who need help can and should be done rationally in order to actually solve the problem rather than just using people as Guinea Pigs repeatedly exposed to unnecessary wood smoke   RAWSEP View   The Brothers Grimm in Germany created fairy tales           The rise of romanticism romantic nationalism and trends in valuing popular culture in the early eighteen hundreds revived interest in fairy tales which had declined since their late sixteen hundreds peak    The Grimms aided the revival with their folklore collection built on the conviction that a national identity could be found in popular culture and with the common folk    They collected and published their tales as a reflection of German cultural identity    In the first collection though they included the Charles Perrault tales published in Paris in sixteen ninety seven and written for the literary salons of an aristocratic French audience    Perrault created a myth that his tales came from the common people and reflected existing folklore to justify including them even though many of them were original     RAWSEP View    The common people of the US are the ninety nine percent today and our current US government is the elite one percent with Trump masquerading to a minority still as one of the common people    The fact that Trump feels free to spend one Billion dollars of US taxpayer money to stop Clean Energy Wind Farms which are an alternative to endless wars over polluting oil marks him not only as the one percent but as a malicious force harmful to the US common people which also brings harm to all people because of the pollution of continuing to use fossil fuels instead of available and cheaper clean energy of wind and solar       Do we need fairy tales?   Not the fairy tales that Trump is sending out about war being a fun video game!    Maybe we need the fairy tales in song about plucky heroes getting other people in the ninety nine percent to stop indoor residential wood burning!   Maybe that is not needed     What is really needed is US financial support for scientists and physicians so they can continue to develop clean energy and they can continue to provide the best medical services to US citizens which of course includes cutting edge development of vaccines most importantly in 2026 vaccines against Covid 19 to prevent another pandemic!    RAWSEP View    Mental health is emphasized by Trump for the wrong reasons           The Gun Lobby says Guns do not kill people but people kill people implying that the only reason people are able to conduct mass shootings are that a few individuals are mentally ill    The reason mass killings can occur is because the tool of mass killings the gun is largely   unregulated in the US      RAWSEP View   The reason that wood burning smoke is allowed to shorten or end the lives of near neighbors is because that indoor residential wood burning is unregulated and is not stopped    The reason that wildfires are increasing is that we are not quickly changing over from dirty energy like industrial wood burning and other solid fuel industrial burning such as fossil fuel burning as well as natural gas burning   It certainly does not help that Trump is spending nearly one billion dollars of US taxpayer money to halt clean energy wind projects in the United States in 2026    It is certainly not helping that Trump is spending reportedly one to two billion dollars a day on a war in Iran which bombs nuclear plants possibly releasing nuclear radiation    RAWSEP View       This article which follows gives attention to Post Traumatic Disorder of enduring a devastating wildfire but the solution put forth mingled with some good reporting on the physical effects of wood smoke is incomplete because the focus is on mental health effects and not physical health effects on victims of wood smoke  Making them sit around a campfire inhaling wood smoke is not good for their physical health and giving permission to wallow in wood smoke as if it is unavoidable is not good for their long term mental health     This is reminiscent of the RFK Junior Wellness Movement which replaces real tested scientific and medical solutions such as masks and vaccines during a pandemic with touchy feely solutions such as drinking bleach     Controlled fires are not the solution     No wood burning fires is the obvious and compassionate solution    The Dialog on wood burning should start there and not veer off in ways that distract from what must be done whether or not it hurts the sensibilities of the one percent elite who now unfortunately control our Federal Government       Forest therapy can exist without burning wood and in fact forest therapy by burning wood makes no sense and is damaging to rational minds searching for solutions not distractions        Be in nature while not damaging nature should be the common sense philosophy      Those who continue to burn wood after going through a devastating wildfire may indeed be the few mentally ill who have been harmed by wood smoke     Not helping them to stop burning wood only makes their problems worse       Those in rural areas who realize their responsibility to stop burning wood should be helped if they are currently not connected to a smart electric grid that connects to all rural areas powered by clean energy such as wind solar and geothermal with energy stored for emergencies in batteries       Excerpts edited for brevity and clarity and relationship to Residents Against Wood Smoke Emission Particulates a 501C3 nonprofit organization          Undark      March 24 2026      Research has increasingly connected wildfire and smoke with worsening mental health partly due to damage in the brain    On a mild day in mid-November among a clutch of oaks and sycamores more than a dozen people encircled a small fire    Some lay splayed on the ground or on blankets others perched on camp stools    Many had their eyes closed while others stared into the flames    California fire season is barely in the rearview mirror    The group had gathered in Paradise California at a park that sits on land burned in the 2018 Camp Fire    That wildfire destroyed most of the town and killed 85 people    In the years since the same region has experienced three other conflagrations that rank among the largest in California history one joined the Camp Fire as among the deadliest    Within the circle sat Blake Ellis the program manager of the ecotherapy program associated with California State University Chico who invited attendees to lean into their senses and pay attention to the smells sounds and feel of the fire    The ecotherapy program which is open to the public offers place based holistic healing practices and leads guided therapeutic programs in nature including those focused on rebuilding a relationship with nature and what Ellis calls good fire    The intention is to slow down relax engage with your senses and to be in nature and community with one another she added and to help the brain write over traumas associated with fire and create neural pathways that connect it with more positive experiences    The ultimate aim is to build resilience within a community repeatedly impacted by devastating wildfires    Participants gather in the fall of 2021 for a forest therapy session at the Butte Creek Ecological Preserve which burned in the 2018 Camp Fire    The session was hosted by an ecotherapy program associated with California State University Chico which aims to build resilience within a community repeatedly impacted by devastating wildfires    Programs that train new clinicians are not moving fast enough to educate them about the health effects of climate change said Joanna Katzman director of public health initiatives at the UNM Project ECHO a program that provides online training and workshops to doctors on topics such as pain management and opioids    But she has already seen programs like ECHO which began hosting climate focused training five years ago boost familiarity with the risks    The clinician who is taking care of them in the emergency room is much more likely to be thinking Is this related to wildfire smoke? Is this related to extreme heat? said Katzman      We are still at the very early stages of really having a mechanistic understanding    Campen too is engaging directly with clinicians    This year he attended the American College of Psychiatrists annual meeting for the first time to speak with psychiatrists about his research findings    Most neurologists and psychiatrists see much more extreme cases he said    The relatively subtle but broad reaching impacts of environmental health often do not really rise to the forefront of their experience and their recommendations    Ellis the director at the ecotherapy program outside Paradise California remains a bit of an outlier    She has made such themes central to her treatment philosophy    In addition to the workshops of the program she sees clients privately and the ecotherapy program has provided forest therapy training to medical residents with Healthy Rural California a nonprofit organization focused on reducing health disparities in rural areas    Fire focused programs like the one she helped lead in Paradise may also foster a relationship with nature controlled fires and their community which can help people through life and future fire related tragedies    While researchers continue interrogating the mechanisms that contribute Ellis is working on addressing the symptoms for those on the ground    We need to have some healing

27 Ukraine      The Ukraine deep strikes make Russians feel the war       Excerpts edited for brevity and clarity by Residents Against Wood Smoke Emission Particulates a 501C3 nonprofit organization          Kiev Independent         March 23 2026            Ukraine has increasingly pursued a strategy of bringing the war back to Russia  aiming to erode the perception that the full scale invasion is distant and cost free for Russian society    This approach was explicitly articulated by President Volodymyr Zelensky in 2025 as Ukraine significantly expanded its deep strike campaign inside Russia    The war was brought from Russia and it is to Russia that the war must be pushed back    They must be the ones forced into peace    They are the ones who must be pressured to ensure security Zelensky said    An internal analysis by the Ukrainian NGO Join Ukraine shared with the Kyiv Independent suggests that strategy is beginning to reshape how the war is felt across Russia    The organization monitors social media discourse and public reactions across Russian regions and occupied territories and found that Russians are increasingly confronting the war through casualties drone attacks internet blackouts and economic disruption    Obituaries have become part of everyday life and comments often include restrained sympathy alongside questions like  What is this war for? Andrii Sukharyna head of analytics at the NGO Join Ukraine told the Kyiv Independent    The shift identified in the Ukraine analysis is becoming visible beyond local reactions and online comment threads    Former Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu recently warned that no Russian region can feel safe while public reactions across regions suggest the war is no longer tied to the front line    Russian President Vladimir Putin L listens to Former Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu R in Moscow Russia on February 23 2024    Russian President Vladimir Putin L listens to Former Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu R in Moscow Russia on February 23 2024    This can be an important factor in increasing political pressure on the Kremlin but only in combination with other elements  particularly external pressure through sanctions Oleksii Melnyk co-director of foreign policy and international security studies at the Razumkov Center told the Kyiv Independent    Melnyk described the Shoigu statement as a bomb in the Russian information space  widely interpreted as an implicit acknowledgment that the operation had not gone according to plan    While geography still shapes how Russians experience the war the gap between regions is narrowing    If these reactions continue to be ignored the tightening of control and accumulated frustration could eventually trigger an explosion in one region and then a chain reaction Melnyk said    The ingredients are already there dissatisfaction with the authorities a growing sense of insecurity and increasing instability    Border regions     The regions most directly affected by the war are Russian border areas  including Kursk Bryansk and Rostov oblasts  as well as occupied Crimea and parts of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts    According to the Join Ukraine analysis these regions show the highest level of military related discourse and the sharpest reactions to attacks    A screenshot from a video posted to social media purporting to show the Atlant Aero plant in Taganrog Rostov Oblast Russia overnight on January 13 2026    A screenshot from a video posted to social media purporting to show the Atlant Aero plant in Taganrog Rostov Oblast Russia overnight on January 13 2026    In these regions we see the highest level of military related discourse and the most acute reactions to events    Residents live in a state of constant anxiety due to regular drone attacks air defense activity and everyday disruptions such as internet outages and sirens Andrii Sukharyna told the Kyiv Independent    They say everything was intercepted  but there was no real protection at all    No air defense no security    It is just embarrassing    Per the analysis these regions also show the most intense and polarized reactions    On one hand there is growing radicalization and calls for escalation  including demands for harsher retaliation such as strikes with Oreshnik ballistic missiles or even nuclear weapons    On the other there is a growing feeling of fatigue and frustration    Residents criticize authorities for failing to ensure basic security citing a lack of shelters ineffective air defenses and repeated disruptions to daily life    A Ukrainian soldier walks along an empty street in Sudzha Russia on August 16 2024    A Ukrainian soldier walks along an empty street in Sudzha Russia on August 16 2024    One resident of the Russian Kursk region reacted to official claims that Ukrainian attacks had been repelled They say everything was intercepted  but there was no real protection at all    No air defense no security    It is just embarrassing    In occupied Donetsk a worsening water crisis has fueled open anger toward occupation authorities especially toward Russian installed leader Denis Pushylin with residents dismissing official reports as disconnected from reality    Rear regions      Further from the front line Russians experience the war differently but no less tangibly    Casualties remain one of the most significant factors shaping perception    The highest losses are recorded in Russian national republics and industrial regions including Bashkortostan Tatarstan Sverdlovsk Chelyabinsk and Volgograd    These regions often economically struggling and politically less visible have taken a disproportionate share of the human cost    At the same time some of these regions  like Volgograd Samara or Tambov  are industrial centers and refinery hubs making them key targets for Ukrainian strikes    This has made the war more materially visible there    A general view of an oil refinery in Volgograd Russia in an undated photo    Footage shows a fire erupting following drone strikes at an oil refinery in Volgograd Russia on August 19 2025    Footage shows a fire erupting following drone strikes at an oil refinery in Volgograd Russia on August 19 2025    According to the analysis residents are increasingly experiencing fuel shortages and rising prices linking the war directly to their economic situation    This is an oil producing country  yet fuel prices jumped from fifty three to nearly sixty rubles    And officials still claim inflation is just eight percent? wrote one resident of Novosibirsk    The need to import fuel from China is also perceived by some as a symbolic blow to the Russian image as an energy superpower    Patriots how does it feel to love Russian oil when it comes as Chinese fuel? But please try writing that from a Russian phone drinking Russian tea or coffee from a Russian kettle another Novosibirsk resident wrote    Distrust toward official narratives is growing as well    Claims by authorities that all aerial targets are intercepted often contrast with visible damage and fires at industrial sites    Open protests remain rare due to the fear of repression but dissatisfaction is increasingly expressed through localized grievances particularly in regions like Kursk Rostov on Don and Voronezh where residents openly question the ability of the state to protect their cities    Remote regions In more remote regions  including the Far East the Urals and Siberia  the war often remains more distant    While overall battlefield casualty numbers are lower in absolute terms per capita losses are among the highest    Despite this for many residents in regions such as Yakutia Khabarovsk or Primorsky Krai the war is often perceived as background noise    According to the analysis public attitudes are frequently characterized by detachment with greater focus on local issues such as rising food prices utilities or economic ties with China    Obituaries and recruitment campaigns tend to be met with passive acceptance    Support for the war in these regions is expressed through practical contributions    A fire at the Komsomolsk refinery in Khabarovsk Krai Russia on April 10 2025     A fire at the Komsomolsk refinery in Khabarovsk Krai Russia on April 10 2025    Yakutsk residents in Yakutsk Russia on March 28 2025    In these regions people remain quite consolidated in their support for the special military operation  not only in words but through humanitarian aid and without visible fatigue the report notes    In places like Khabarovsk Krai there is little engagement with the course of the war and few expectations about its outcome    Relative economic stability  supported by ongoing ties with China  reduces the perceived impact of casualties sanctions or international isolation    Moscow    Across regions there is also a widespread perception that Moscow is far better protected than the rest of the country In early March Moscow experienced at least a week of widespread mobile internet disruptions significantly affecting daily life    Authorities later introduced a whitelist system allowing access only to selected websites during outages    A screen displays the broadcast of the annual state of the nation address by Russian President Vladimir Putin as an employee fuels a car at a gas station in Moscow Russia on February 29 2024    Demand for alternative communication tools  including pagers walkie talkies and landline phones  has increased while sales of printed maps and travel guides surged as residents adapted to internet blackouts    Mass mobile internet shutdowns have become a widespread Kremlin tool for information control across Russia since early 2025 turning the country into a global leader in internet restrictions    According to the Join Ukraine analysis this is one of the few unifying grievances across regions that are outraged that measures introduced for security reasons disrupt daily life but fail to stop drone attacks   Russians increasingly reject state backed digital platforms and actively share ways to bypass restrictions including through VPNs    For now these reactions remain scattered rather than coherently organized politically but they suggest the Kremlin is losing something it has long relied on the ability to control not only the narrative of the war but also how Russians experience it
