12 Utah Park City wood burning Why the traditional wood burning fireplace is facing extinction MSN April 27 2026 Tovima dot com February 18 2026 There is absolutely a preference toward wood burning fireplaces particularly in luxury homes says Bill Fister general manager at the Chimney AI Summary To understand why the traditional wood burning fireplace is facing extinction consider the following factors Environmental Concerns Wood burning fireplaces contribute to air pollution and carbon emissions Health Risks Smoke from wood fires can cause respiratory issues and other health problems Energy Efficiency Modern heating systems are more efficient and provide better heat distribution Regulatory Restrictions Many regions are implementing stricter regulations on wood burning appliances Maintenance Challenges Wood fireplaces require regular cleaning and maintenance which can be cumbersome Alternative Heating Options Electric and gas fireplaces offer convenience and ease of use without the drawbacks of wood Homeowners still love a crackling cozy fire But environmental concerns construction barriers and the lack of skills needed to build them are turning wood burners into a vanishing art Excerpts Edited By Residents Against Wood Smoke Emission Particulates a 501C3 nonprofit organization The Wall Street Journal February 18 2026 A sought after feature in high end homes has long been a primitive void in the heart of the great room the wood burning fireplace But between tightening restrictions the age old labor of maintenance and homeowners with no experience at the hearth the traditional wood burner risks transitioning from a household staple to a high status relic Wood burning fires are a vanishing art says Park City based interior designer Kristina Lawrence She estimates that while 90 percent of her clients want a wood burning fireplace in theory only about 50 percent of her projects include one People realize it is a hassle or they are simply not allowed A fireplace is consistently among the most searched amenities by home buyers nationwide according to Zillow But while convenience leans toward the automated ease of gas many wealthy homeowners prefer the sensory trifecta of real fire the scent the rhythmic crackling and the living warmth that a faux flame simply cannot mimic The more high end the property is the more the homeowner typically wants it Choosing a wood burning fireplace is a lifestyle choice In Park City Utah realtors are currently listing a 12 point 75 million dollar home built in 2001 with 11 working fireplaces Only one in the primary bathroom is gas only Many clients want fireplaces for sentimental reasons A wood burning fireplace brings together all the elements of nostalgia A fireplace becomes a centerpiece where families gather But a growing number of US municipalities now prohibit wood burning fireplaces in new construction These regulations largely aim to mitigate the environmental and health risks arising from fine particulate matter emissions and other airborne pollutants In some Utah communities an existing wood burning fireplace is grandfathered in while new installations are prohibited That means switching to gas could result in forfeiting the wood burning right forever When remodeling she says she presses wood burning owners Are you sure are you sure are you sure you want to get rid of it? Even when a wood burner is technically permitted construction hurdles can push homeowners toward alternatives For example finding a skilled mason in a small town can be difficult and expensive And once a wood burning fireplace is built air quality alerts or high fire risks can trigger temporary usage bans There is a possibility you may not even be able to start a fire when you want to Meanwhile the mechanics of a hearth can be a mystery for homeowners raised in climate controlled homes The lack of skill is more than just frustrating it is a safety concern In Park City Utah a three level townhome burned to the ground after renters mismanaged a fire While many owners want a wood burner in theory they rarely want the work The romantic image of the homeowner chopping wood often collapses under the practical reality of soot ash and spiders in the wood pile it is totally about the cozy ambience No one has ever said to me I want to chop my wood light my fire and clean out all those ashes A popular compromise is the gas starter which helps a homeowner to ignite real logs In areas where wood burners are banned some install high tech water vapor units that use water mist and lights to mimic the visual of fire without the smoke But in the most exclusive tier of the market fireplace labor is simply outsourced as a concierge service Property managers bring in wood stack it properly in the fireplace and clean up afterward In Utah at a famous Lodge for instance unit owners and guests can enjoy a real fire without lifting a finger As a complimentary service bell staff can be dispatched to place the kindling and light the match They then depart Fire is out? Housekeeping handles the cleanup of course
13 Vermont wood burning RAWSEP View What does the word inadvertently mean? Inadvertantly is an adverb which means unintentionally or while not focusing the mind on a matter or while being inattentive A Scientist who follows the science does not come to conclusions unintentionally or in an unfocused way or by not paying attention to the facts that arise during scientific experiments unless one is only called a scientist but only goes through the motions of conducting an experiment but is inattentive to what the results tell the scientist At the end of this Abstract the scientist author states These findings suggest that more thorough and better monitoring of biomass burning emissions are necessary to ensure that the transition to wood fuel does not inadvertently cause harm to public health So the conclusion is that wood burning causes harm to human health But the scientist tiptoes around this conclusion because traditionally wood burners have been assured that because photosynthesis conducted by trees planted to replaced burned trees sequester some carbon even if the carbon is produced by the burning of trees themselves But the editor of RAWSEP read a research paper from 2024 which concluded that living trees close their pores against the PM 2 point five produced by nearby wood burning and when living tree pores are closed the living tree cannot conduct photosynthesis so in these conditions Carbon Dioxide produced by nearby wood burning is not sequestered by photosynthesis and so the living tree when encountering Biomass Burning or Fossil Fuel Burning does not sequester Carbon So the advantage of burning wood and replacing the burned wood with a living tree does not slow climate change any faster than burning fossil fuels The idea that burning wood is better for the climate than fossil fuel burning is a lazy assumption assumed to make wood burners feel something that is not a fact Because wood burning emits 2 point 8 times the PM two point five as coal burning and wood burning emits Four Hundred Fifty Times the PM two point five as the fossil fuel natural gas burning you come out of wood burning behind in any attempt to slow climate change After burning wood you end up blocking photosynthesis in nearby living trees and therefore you end up with more PM two point five as well as more CO2 in the atmosphere from wood burning than from fossil fuel burning This study also concludes that lead is released into the atmosphere from wood burning The editor of RAWSEP in direct statements of fact concludes that Unintentionally Burning wood does not inadvertently cause health problems for instance from lead exposure Unintentionally Burning wood predictably causes health problems for instance from lead exposure The climate benefits from burning wood are worse than the climate benefits from burning coal or burning natural gas The climate benefits from burning wood compared to burning fossil fuels do not exist There should be no transition from fossil fuel to wood fuel There is no scientific basis for any transition from fossil fuel to wood fuel in order to slow climate change Transition to wood fuel instead hastens climate change Scientists should be urging a transition to clean energy to replace the obsoletely polluting in terms of environmental health and human health How these scientists are paid for their research can probably be traced to their being paid for these weak and inattentive conclusions by the payment from the wood burning industry From the article headline Back to the future trace lead in ambient air from wood fuel combustion Nature April 22 2026 While wood burning promises potential climate benefits in reducing fossil fuels usage it also poses significant risks related to air pollution and Abstract Background Deciding to classify wood as a renewable resource for residential space heating is a contentious issue because it balances a relatively inexpensive fuel against the public health risks of wood smoke exposure Objective To investigate wood fuel emissions as a source of trace lead exposure via ambient air in the northern regions of the United States US Methods Federal Reference Methods filters n equals 182 were obtained from the state of the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation from Rutland n equals 97 and New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services from Keene n equals 85 Filter samples were collected during the winters of 2011–2016 and analyzed by Energy Dispersive X ray Fluorescence Chemical speciation data was compiled from 22 national sites via the Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments and EPA Chemical Speciation Network CSN which were compared to the concentrations of wood smoke emissions observed across northeastern US Results Our evidence indicates a link between wood burning emissions with increased concentrations in particle bound lead that is associated with wood combustion Linear regression models in Keene NH R2 equals 0 point 438 and Rutland VT R2 equals 0 point 341 indicate moderate agreement between tracers of wood smoke and lead suggesting a common source On average lead concentrations ranged from 0 point 86 nanograms per cubic meter in the Rocky Mountains Region to 1 point 70 nanograms per cubic meter in the Southeast Region We observed varying correlations between lead and potassium across the US with slight to modest agreement R2 equals 0 point 09 to 0 point 47 at most sites the strongest associations were on the Pacific Coast R2 greater than 0 point 40 This suggests that a strong relationship between potassium and lead is observed at many nationwide locations Significance Wood burning an activity common in many rural parts of the US is a likely anthropogenic source of lead introduced into ambient air throughout the northern portion of the US in the winters of Two Thousand Eleven to Two Thousand Sixteen These ambient lead exposures are likely to have long term adverse public health impacts Impact While wood burning promises potential climate benefits in reducing fossil fuels usage it also poses significant risks related to air pollution and human exposure to toxic substances like lead These findings suggest that more thorough and better monitoring of biomass burning emissions are necessary to ensure that the transition to wood fuel does not inadvertently cause harm to public health

18A United Kingdom England Cornwall wood burning I tracked indoor air pollution levels in my home after using a wood burning stove Excerpts Edited By Residents Against Wood Smoke Emission Particulates a 501C3 nonprofit organization MSN April 27 2026 A woman who monitored indoor air pollution levels after using a wood burner has revealed the concerning results I tracked indoor air pollution levels in my home after using a wood burning stove The Daily Mail April 27 2026 A woman who monitored indoor air pollution levels after using a wood burner has revealed the concerning results and says it has changed how her family will use it in the future Concerns have been growing around the trendy stoves after a study last year linked them to thousands of deaths every year in Britain They were subsequently hit with cigarette style health warnings in January The burners popular in urban areas outside major cities work by scorching dry firewood in a sealed box before a blower fan distributes the hot air around the room But major research has found this to be a source of air pollution known as particulate matter PM linked to dementia heart and lung disease A report last October by climate charity Global Action Plan and Hertfordshire County Council connected the pollution to an average of more than Three Thousand Seven Hundred of diabetes and nearly One Thousand Five Hundred cases of asthma in the country each year Just months later the government unveiled proposals in January for the burners to carry a label outlining the harms pollution can cause including lung cancer In recent months there has been a shift towards healthier ceramic stoves but many are refusing to give up their prized wood burners The parents of Hannah Healey who live in rural Cornwall are among those who have kept their stove typically using it during the winter months to keep cozy A woman who monitored pollution levels in the home of her parents after using her wood burner has revealed the concerning results But as a health investigations writer for Which? Ms Healey is aware of the risks wood burners can pose With that in mind she set out to track just how many potentially harmful particles her parents are regularly being exposed to In order to investigate Ms Healey used an air quality monitor in the living room for five days measuring levels of PM2 point 5 and PM10 pollution particles in the air in micrograms per cubic meter For example a result of 1 micrograms per cubic meter would mean that everyone cubic meter of air contains one microgram of PM PM2 point 5 has been linked to a range of serious health problems including stroke cardiovascular disease lung cancer and chronic respiratory infections Short term effects can also include coughing breathing difficulties headaches infections of the eyes nose and throat as well as skin irritation allergies and acute lower respiratory infections After analyzing the air in the house of her parents for five days Ms Healey found that PM2 point 5 levels were far higher when the wood burner was in use compared to when it was not During burning periods PM2 point 5 readings ranged from 4 point 91 micrograms per cubic meter on day one to 11 point 94 micrograms per cubic meter on day five It exceeded 11 micrograms per cubic meter on three of the five days By contrast pollution levels were below 1 micrograms per cubic meter on four out of five days when the wood burner was not in use hitting a high of 1 point 74 micrograms per cubic meter on day five She also found air pollution spiked sharply after the stove was lit On one evening levels of PM TWO POINT FIVE were between 0 micrograms per cubic meter and 1 micrograms per cubic meter before she used the wood burner After lighting it at 7 10 pm levels of the pollutant averaged at 16 point 24 micrograms per cubic meter before tapering down to 10 point 07 micrograms per cubic meter between 9pm and 10pm The highest pollution level recorded during the study by Ms Healey was 24 point 46 micrograms per cubic meter Official guidance by the World Health Organization states that the recommended limit for average PM TWO POINT FIVE exposure over a 24 hour period is 15 micrograms per cubic meter meaning the average of the results of Ms Healey sat below that threshold However Professor James Allan professor of air pollution measurement at the University of Manchester warned that even studies of relatively low levels of air pollution have found adverse health effects He told Which? In addition it seems that particulate matter from wood burning is a particularly harmful form of pollutant Doctor James Heydon associate professor at the school of sociology and social policy at the University of Nottingham added Research suggests that PM TWO POINT FIVE is especially damaging to your health because it can enter your bloodstream which means it can cause inflammatory responses throughout the body Ms Healey concluded that while she remains unsure exactly how harmful the wood burner of her parents is it has made them reconsider how often they use it She said We have decided we will not continue to use it every single night as we do not feel it is worth the potential health risks of even low levels of daily PM exposure We will not stop using it altogether but will consider it to be a treat for special occasions rather than something to do every day Her findings come just months after tighter restrictions and guidelines were introduced for wood burners in Britain As well as announcing that stoves would carry warning labels ministers also proposed cutting the limit on smoke emitted from wood burners by 80 per cent to one gram per hour However the long awaited measure would apply only to new wood burners many of which already meet the stricter limits Emma Hardy the air quality minister said Dirty air robs people of their health and costs our NHS millions each year to treat lung conditions and asthma We are determined to clean up our air By limiting emission levels and introducing new labels as outlined in our consultation families will be able to make better healthier choices when heating their homes The restrictions are predicted to cut annual toxic emissions from wood burning in the UK by just 10 per cent over the next decade but campaigners said the measures do not go far enough
